I will also add the fact that doing what those people say can cause future software installations to fail, as they might see your computer still running SP2 and not SP3 Then plug all your USB devices back in and they will all work perfectly, provided that they are all XPSP3 compatible, which these days, they all are.

Probably when the “performing cleanup” step is successfully completed it adds a registry key or some parameter somewhere that these programs ask for it, they search them, and when not found I have three other desktop machines all running XP pro and have been able to successfully install the Service pack 3 update on these.
It looks like its about 90% complete but won't go any further. When I restart every thing is okay. On both laptop machines, the My Computer properties tab still say Service Pack 2. Go through the same update procedure and once you get to the "performing cleanup" freeze, just call up the Task Manager to stop it.
It seems that one of the hotfix installers got hung up. The process hangs with the 2nd of two windows saying "Software Update Installation Wizard" box still up on the screen.
