Give 'em a month or two. If you have a previous version of Windows (XP or Vista), try launching Windows 7 Setup from that OS first, even if you want to wipe out the previous Windows verison. After verifying and virus scanning the media, try to write to it again on both sides of the gap to ensure it doesn't have an open write session.
